Biography

Erin E. Canalia’s practice focuses on insurance defense, insurance coverage and civil litigation including litigation at the appellate level. Her experience includes litigating cases involving complex legal and factual issues, including in the fields of product liability, employment discrimination and construction defect law. She has litigated cases in Connecticut state and federal court, including cases on appeal before the Connecticut Appellate Court and Connecticut Supreme Court. Her practice also includes litigating before administrative agencies. Erin has successfully defended and resolved matters on behalf of corporate and individual clients. She prides herself on providing her clients representation based upon a thoughtful and diligent analysis of the pertinent issues, tailored to the individual needs of her clients.

Most recently, Erin and her fellow NPM colleague, Attorney Deborah Etlinger won a Motion for Summary Judgement based on the defense of governmental immunity while defending a town and its Board of Education against a claim of sexual abuse by an elementary school teacher.  The court agreed with the defendants’ position and held that a plaintiff cannot aggregate the knowledge of various school employees to create a duty to report suspected abuse. The court further held that the board’s supervision duty was a discretionary function as to which governmental immunity applied. It rejected that the identifiable victim in danger of imminent harm exception applied based upon the facts in this case. As to the town, the court granted summary judgment in its favor, finding that any potential liability was vicarious. The court held that because the board had no liability, neither did the town.  Deborah has extensive experience defending institutional clients in these types of cases.

Erin graduated summa cum laude from Albertus Magnus College in 2009 as valedictorian and obtained her juris doctorate summa cum laude from Quinnipiac University School of Law in 2012. She is admitted to the Connecticut State Bar and the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut.
