Neubert, Pepe & Monteith Awards Scholarships to Four New Haven Area Students
June 15, 2015NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (June 18, 2015) – The second annual Neubert, Pepe & Monteith Scholarship awards event, held at Gateway Community College, 20 Church Street in New Haven, Connecticut, was celebrated this week with a large crowd in attendance. The celebration showcased four students who were awarded the Neubert, Pepe & Monteith Scholarship and recognized LEAPs over 100 Junior and Senior Counselors, most of whom were in attendance. Also at the event, two LEAP students were awarded the J. Bovilsky Scholarship. The air was festive and the counselors boisterous as they cheered for each of the scholarship recipients and again for all the students heading to college. Celebrating with the awardees and their families were representatives from Neubert, Pepe & Monteith, P.C. and LEAP staff and board members.
Gregory J. Pepe, founding partner of Neubert, Pepe & Monteith, P.C. presented the Neubert, Pepe & Monteith Scholarships to Tatiana Alvelo, Ajanae Amos, Forel Kourouma and Quiara Outing. Ms. Alvelo will graduate from Platt Technical High School and plans to attend Dominican College in New York; Ms. Amos will graduate from Hill Regional Career High School and plans to attend Southern Connecticut State University; Mr. Kourouma will graduate from James Hillhouse High School and plans to attend Hampshire College in Massachusetts; and Ms. Outing will graduate from Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School and plans to attend Southern Connecticut State University.
“Neubert, Pepe & Monteith is proud to contribute to the college education of these four LEAP counselors, and in that way continue to make New Haven a more vibrant, successful community for all of us,” states Greg Pepe.
Mr. Fernandez, LEAP Executive Director, asked for a show of hands of those current counselors who grew up attending LEAP. Many hands quickly shot up. Mr. Fernandez continued, telling the students that while they had been influenced over those years by their counselors, now as a counselor themselves, they had the opportunity to be a positive influence for others. Attorney Pepe remarked that years from now he would welcome a knock on his door from a Scholarship recipient who had gone on to receive his or her law degree, who stood before him and said, it was now their time to be in the corner office.
The Neubert, Pepe & Monteith Scholarship is awarded to New Haven and area high school seniors affiliated with LEAP (Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership), an organization focused on encouraging and developing the strengths and talents of New Haven youth. The scholarship provides up to four LEAP students with an award of $2,500 or more. The students selected demonstrate a strong work ethic, a solid record of community service, commitment to their education, exemplary school attendance, and a long and constructive relationship with LEAP.
LEAPs mission is to develop the strengths and talents of young leaders who implement year-round, community and school-based programming designed to achieve positive academic and social outcomes for children living in high poverty urban neighborhoods. Since 1992, LEAP (www.leapforkids.org) has led the movement to provide children and youth with opportunities to thrive in all areas of their lives.
