NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (April 23, 2015) – Prison inmates can justly raise civil rights violations and are afforded the right to legal representation. As stated in the United States District Court District of Connecticut Standing Order Regarding Pro Bono Representation, the presiding judge in a civil case makes the determination whether pro bono counsel should be appointed for the representation of any individual who cannot afford an attorney and who meets the criteria that the claim has been determined to be of likely merit.

Two such cases, both in which the party raising a civil rights violation is a prison inmate, are currently in front of Neubert, Pepe & Monteith, P.C. attorneys Brittany S. Cates and Sandy T. Roussas.

Sandy T. Roussas

Attorney Cates and Attorney Roussas are admitted to the U.S. District Court District of Connecticut and are members of the Connecticut Bar and are therefore eligible to provide pro bono representation to indigent persons in civil cases. The District of Connecticut keeps an active list of eligible attorneys and depends on volunteer counsel to accept pro bono cases. Attorney Cates, who practices defense litigation primarily in the areas of general and medical malpractice and Attorney Roussas, who practices defense litigation primarily in the area of general liability and medical malpractice, are both volunteer counsel for pro bono cases.

“In doing this work I’m able to give back to the community, specifically for a population that doesn’t normally get representation,” states Cates. “It has been a very eye-opening experience.”

Attorney Roussas adds, “Working in the service of others is both a responsibility and a privilege that I’m grateful to enjoy with my firm’s support. My client and I hope to prove that prison inmates are entitled to protection from inmate-on-inmate violence.” The firm of Neubert, Pepe & Monteith, P.C. is committed to service and fully supports the pro bono work of the firm’s attorneys and further supports varied civic, charitable, education and community organizations.
