August 25, 2022

Gretchen G. Randall presented at a recent St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury, CT, Department of Surgery Grand Rounds Lecture. Attorney Randall’s presentation, titled “Avoiding and Reducing Medical-Legal Risk: Effective Charting and Communication” was delivered to attending surgeons, mid-level providers, and surgical residents.

Attorney Randall provided concrete ways in which detailed physician entries in a patient’s medical record can assist in the successful defense of a malpractice claim and the hazards of a sparse record. She also discussed the importance of contemporaneous charting, the benefits and drawbacks of electronic medical records, and effective methods of inter-provider communications. These concepts were further explored through a series of hypothetical case studies and chart reviews.
